Makers Month: How to Size Up a Paper Pattern

Being a plus size most of my life, means that most of the sewing I do involves scaling up patterns. Today as we are in Makers Month mode I thought I would share how I do that with one of the patterns I have done this with recently, The Bettine dress from Tilly and the Buttons. This is a great pattern to practice sizing-up on as it is reasonably straight forward to sew and the pattern pieces are simple.

I use a sewing curve, also called a French curve or a pattern master depending on who you talk to about it. It has two straight sides at a right angle and a steep then sloping curve along the other. Mine has lots of helpful measurements and guidelines on it which help with measuring and creating your own curves for pattern making from scratch. I am lazy and generally prefer to alter an existing pattern to making my own from scratch.

Most paper patterns have multi size options printed on the pattern sheets. you can use these to scale the measurements that you will need to use to size up, you will also need dressmakers tracing paper or you can use greaseproof baking paper. I always iron out the original pattern paper and my tracing paper before I start as both have usually been folded in a packet for some time. Take care not to scorch the paper, I usually set it on a wool setting/ two dots. My last tip before we start is to tape down your pattern and tracing paper with masking or washi tape so the layers don't move about until you move them.

Start by taking a look a your pattern pieces, some lines won't move but will need extending, some will need moving and curves will need shifting. Curves (in general) should not need to be altered, you can see that the curves don't change shape they just move, it will be the lines they are connected to that will be moving therefore the curves can just be traced into their new position.

Your pattern should be taped to your table and the tracing paper placed over the top.

Photo 1.  Trace all the lines that are not moving, in the case of the Bettine it is the centre fold and the waist, but extend the lines past the edges.
Photo 2.  Mark the end of the lines that need moving, for instance the armpit line where the curve starts.
Photo 3.  Peel back the tracing paper and measure the difference between the biggest and the next size down. This gives you the measurement for where the next size up line should be.
Photo 4.  Pop the tracing layer back in place and use the measurement to add as many sizes as need be to your pattern. I have added 3 sizes to mine by moving the line over three times the measurement that I took.
Photo 5.  Draw your new line up to meet the marking you made for the end of the line, where you new curve will start.
Photo 6.  Next is the line on the other side of that curve, the bottom of the sleeve. The position of this is affected in two directions, the line moves up and across.

Photo 7.  You can see here I have added the measurement for one size at a time until reached the size I wanted, I find it easier with those fiddly bits to mark every size increment.
Photo 8.  Again, you want to measure the length of the straight line to where the curve starts.
Photo 9.  Mark clearly where the curve begins. You then want to un-stick your top sheet and slide it over until the curve on the pattern underneath is in line with the markings you have made.
Photo 10.  Then you can trace the curve exactly in place.
Photo 11.  Some lines will be easier to scale, the top edge of the sleeve for instance can be sized up following the diagonal line created by the sizes below.
Photo 12.  Again using the measurements from the sizes below you can add as many sizes as you might need to make your pattern fit your needs.

If you are also looking to lengthen or shorten your paper pattern, the pattern itself may have markings on it where you can do so. Tilly's helpfully do, so all you would have to do here is measure how much longer you want your finished garment to be and add in a section by allowing for that in your traced pieces. If you forget to add it whilst you are tracing, you can always go in and add in a section by cutting and taping an extra piece in place of by folding the pattern at that point.

This process is the easiest, most accurate way to size up or down that I have found but it is lengthy to explain. I do hope that my explanation is clear enough to follow and use for your own pattern sizing experiments. If you are unsure check out this article from Craftsy.com for another style of up-sizing.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments and I will do my best to answer them. If you are interested in Tilly's patterns we now stock the full range of printed patterns at Sew Crafty Online. Tilly has a great post on her blog about adding a seam allowance if the pattern you are using doesn't have one (all Tilly patterns have the allowance included) if that is something you are interested in.

I hope that might help any of you that are above or below standard pattern sizing but desire a handmade wardrobe.

Love it: Autumn Mix & Match

Blankets 1/2/3 | Dresses 1/2/3 | Scarves 1/2/3 | Boots 1/2/3

My autumn wardrobe can be a little on the dark side, so I have been trying to inject a few pieces that are more colourful, but easy to throw on in the misty mornings with the rest of my go to pieces.

I have put together a little mix and match of a few bits that I am loving lately to inspire myself into making better outfit choices and getting out of my comfort zone.
What are your go-to pieces for this time of year? what pieces are you loving right now?

How We Wear...New Look Special

If you have been reading our blog for a while, you will know that we are big New Look fans, so you can imagine how excited we were when they got in touch and asked if we would be up for a 'How We Wear' feature around some of their pieces. We both love the variety of styles, I Love their Plus Size Inspire brand and we both love how affordable their ranges are without compromising on quality. To put a twist on it this month we gave ourselves the challenge of choosing pieces for each-other to style based of three themes.  Afternoon tea, Festival and Girls Night Out were our themes and H and I picked out three items from New Look and New Look Inspire.

Afternoon Tea

For Afternoon tea, H picked me this amazing blazer, I love the colour and the lightweight soft fabric makes it a dream to wear. I paired it with a monochrome dress and turquoise accessories.

Blazer from New Look/ Bag from Ollie & Nic/ Shoes from Dorothy Perkins/ Dress from Yours/ Necklace from New Look.

Sammy chose me this lovely pleated chiffon skirt. I love these style of skirts as they are so easy to wear and comfortable, but always look smart. I paired it with my favourite blue accessories and my amazing Cambridge Satchel.

Festival

Sammy picked out this Denim Dress for my Festival look, it is really comfortable and great for pairing with my new favourite kimonos. I went to town and mixed and matched my floral accessories. I love these floral trainers for summer.

H picked me out some shorts (similar here) which I was unsure about at first, but I am in love with them! They are so comfy. I wore them loads on my recent holiday to Austria as they were great for travelling.  I paired them with this mint tunic tucked in as I love mint with denim.

Shorts from New Look/ Tunic from New Look/ Necklace by me/ Bag from River Island/ Trainers from Sports Direct.

Girls Night Out

H was onto a winner when she chose me this amazing Tunic, I already have this shape of top/dress in a few colours and I adore this print! I have an addiction to neon and acid greens and yellows at the moment so it was a perfect pick for a night out. I wore it with my favourite black skinny and strappy wedges.

Tunic from New Look/ Necklace from Accessorize/ Wedges from New Look/ Jeans from Dorothy Perkins/ Clutch from New Look.

I love the versatility of this Kimono, I have worn it with a black leather belt and added some studded accessories to give this very floral number a rockier edge. Over my favourite skinnys it is really pretty for a night out with the girls.

Let us know in the comments below how you would wear the items we chose? Would you team the blazer with jeans or the kimono with a midi skirt? We would love to know how you would wear these pieces.

A massive thank you to New Look and the Inspire team.

Make it: Fast Festival Jacket

My lovely friend Kelly sent me a text yesterday afternoon, she asked me if I could help her jazz up a last minute purchase in time for her trip to Wireless festival this weekend! I love a challenge, so I told her to get over to my place asap to rummage in my craft room for some inspiration. We ended up in my gemstone boxes for a quick and easy update for her 'what if the weather isn't that great' jacket.

How We Wear... Print Trousers

H and I have both been crushing hard on printed or patterned trousers lately, they are a great alternative to jeans if you want a relaxed day time outfit. We both love wearing ours with statement necklaces and comfy jersey tops. How do you wear yours?

H wears: Trousers by H&M, T-shirt by ASOS, Shoes £3 from Primark, Bracelets from Accessorize (Similar) and Forever 21 (Similar), Necklace by I am Acrylic.

Sammy wears: Neon kimono by BooHoo, Swing top by Asos (similar), Trousers by Yours, Sandals by Newlook (added ribbon), necklace from Forever 21.

Make it: Outfit alterations

I do this thing, where I buy clothes that are not quite right from the high street, second hand shops or vintage clothes that just need a little something doing to them.  Then they languish in my wardrobe for roughly 4 months, before I get a large enough collection together, before I finally admit defeat and actually alter them to be able to wear them.

I don't know why I don't just do it a little at a time, I guess its like ironing, you wait until there is a large enough pile to warrant you getting the iron and ironing board out, so you end up doing a whole batch at a time, rather than just small bits.  But lets not get me onto ironing, because I have been known to send things to the charity shop once I have worn them once and realised they need ironing for the next wear.  My iron only comes out when I am crafting or dressmaking!

I thought I would show you a few of the items I managed to do this time and let you know what I did, so that you can perhaps get some inspiration to alter those almost perfect items into perfect pieces.

Firstly the skirt at the top of this post, unfortunately I don't have a before shot!  I got a bit too scissor happy before I thought to photograph it!  This was once a button up dress from a charity shop that I loved, yes because its blue and spotty.  The top part didn't fit and so I lopped it off and made a hem over the elastic waistband, so that it becomes a great skirt.  Brilliant for the summer.

Next up, was this maxi dress from Primark for £13 that I loved the pattern of - it's this season and so you might still be able to find it.  The length just wasn't quite long enough for my liking, I like my maxi dresses to be right onto the floor and this was more mid calf length.  In Primark the short dresses are far too short for me and so I thought that I could just make a longer dress into my desired length instead.

All I did, was to hang it in front of a dress I already liked the length of and then go around and pin in to the desired length, making sure its nice and even all the way around, again this is made so much easier having another dress to match it up to, especially if you are a single girl, so no help hemming up from a friend!

Then it was just a case of hemming it at the right length and using pinking shears to stop it from fraying too much.  You could also roll hem or double hem if you prefer.

I bought this dress about 8 months ago (the shame) from Frock and Roll for about £12 and loved it from first sight.  As you can see it was just a little too long for me as it drowned me a little and it had no shape to it.

So with my trusty friend Sammy with me I asked her to help me create some darts in the back.  All it needed for a little shape at the top.  She grabbed about an inch section on two sides of my back and that was enough to make the darts at the back.  I then put the dress in front of another dress to do the same hemming as the other dress.

This last dress has been in my wardrobe for years and I have worn it - honest!  But everytime I put it on, it just didn't quite feel right.  I bought it years ago from Pop Boutique  for about £10 and had to re-elasticate the waist back then, but it still didn't quite fit properly and so it has been put on and taken off more times than it has actually been worn.

Again, this dress was just a little too long and so I pulled up the skirt into the waistband to shorten it, making sure it was straight all the way around.  The sleeves were a little too baggy but as the top of the sleeves has some tucks, it was the bottom part of the sleeve that got altered.  I just took a little bit off from the inside of the arm, making the curve dip into the armpit area a bit more and it has given it much more shape.

So, what do you think.  These are all really simple things to do and so I really should do it more often, rather than waiting for a pile up.  Is there any big transformations you have made or smaller alterations, just to make things fit that little bit better?  Let us know in the comments or share with us on Instagram or Twitter with #livelovemake.

Just off to find some more goodies.
