Hey there, so another week, another maker to treat you to for Makers Month. This time we have a husband and wife team that make up the great The Workbench Shop. Five Simple Ways to Support Handmade
One of the most wonderful things, that we never imagined when we started this blog almost five years ago, was the amazing people we would meet and make friends with along the way. It is something we never expected and is the thing that keeps us going after all this time. We find it hard to go a week without discovering a new maker or designer or illustrator crush.
For us though it is not just about buying awesome things, it is about supporting our friends old and new, supporting talented individuals who are putting themselves out there and creating careers for themselves. Supporting our local economy, supporting British design and home grown creatives. We are here to tell you how you can start to do the same.
1. Shop local, it supports the economy. Take a look around your local shops and galleries, you may be surprised at what you can find not far from your door. Check out local fairs and markets, you will often find really amazing quality and service, with people who are a part of your community creating amazing products. By shopping with them you are getting better value for money and most likely helping the environment by reducing your carbon foot print and waste by buying higher quality products.
2. Local is not the only way to make your support known in the handmade community, online marketplaces like Etsy, Folksy, Not on the High Street and shortly Look Lane are a great place to find bespoke gifts and unique products.
3. Instagram has become an amazing showcase for brands of all size, but it is particularly great for finding small boutique brands and connecting with those that run them, I cannot tell you how many products I have bought from designers I have found on Instagram. Following accounts like Renegade and Etsy will introduce you to lots of new makers all over the world. If Instagram isn't your thing, try Facebook or Twitter, most makers will be on at least one of these platforms.
4. When you find makers you like buying their product is not enough! Sharing your finds on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook or even just with your friends will in turn help you find more makers and help them to spread their message further than they can alone. Word of mouth is still a powerful tool, especially in this digital age. If you find something you like shout about it, to everyone you know!
5. We are not all made of money so if buying all your products from designer makers isn't an option but you still want to support the handmade community why not check out what you can do to help. Websites and initiatives like UK Handmade, Small Business Saturday or the Just a card campaign have been instrumental in bringing the issues effecting independent businesses to the fore front of peoples attentions. There may be events or initiatives in your local area that could use volunteers. If you have accounting skills, offer some lower rates for independent traders or if you are in marketing offer to run a workshop. If you don't have a local craft fair near you, organise one! The answer is if you can't give your money, give your time or support.
These are just five ways to support handmade, there are lots more but we think these are a great place to start. If you have some to add please let us know in the comments below.

Lets meet: The Things She Makes
Hi again, its Lets meet time and this month we are having a chat with a fellow blogger, so lets see who it is.
Hello! I'm Sophie from the blog The Things She Makes, where I share the things I make, or at least attempt to!
What was the first thing you remember making?
I was really encouraged to make things when I was younger and had a real range of materials to work with. I remember making friendship bracelets and pressing flowers a lot and I've always been a card maker - grandparents birthdays in particular meant that I would be making something, whether painting a picture or creating a trinket gift. I also liked to sew - I had some brilliantly bad attempts at fixing my leggings. But the first real make I can remember is a little air dry clay flower wrap with dried lavender inside that I made for my Mum. She still has it!
I think it's something I realised early on - that I wanted to and enjoyed making 'things, rather than felt I had to do. If you were to ask my family, I'm sure they'd say I've always been creative. I get very itchy fingers if I haven't made something in a while and I have many post-it notes and lists of ideas - it's something that I've always done.
What has been your favourite ever make? Whether that be for your business or pleasure – tell us about it.
Usually it's trying out those projects that start as an idea and completely work - often for me, its the process of making rather than the final DIY! I have been honoured to make the Wedding stationery for a few friends, but my Brother's Wedding stationery has to be my favourite make - I loved every minute of it and seeing it all come together on one of the most important days of his life was pretty amazing.
Otherwise, anything that involves glitter and using my glue gun is always a winner for me.
What are your favourite ways to stay inspired?
The blogging community is hugely inspiring - and so supportive. I'm also a huge YouTube watcher, Instagram stalker and Pinterest browser. Anything, a colour, technique, pattern or medium can spark an idea or help me find the solution to something that might not have worked out first time. If I'm stuck in a rut, looking over the lists of ideas I've previously made or left over materials can usually set me off on a project but I think it's also important to recognise when inspiration isn't there and not force it - a little break can be all that's needed to recharge.
Who are your favourite Designer/Makers right now?
Etsy and Instagram are my favourite place to find new makers. I'm a huge fan of typography at the moment (stationery in general, always!) and it's something that I can practice easily whilst my craft stash is in storage. My current faves are Old English Company, Violet & Alfie, Elsie & Nell, Sir Albert Co. and Skandi Design.
What crafty item is top of your wishlist?
I'm late to the party, but I've wanted, ummmed and aaahhhhed about an electric cutter machine. I really need one for all the sweet slogan jumpers, t-shirts and bags I have designed in my head! I'm still window-shopping on that one though.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
Making something - whether small or a large project - is usually my favourite way to relax and if I'm not doing that, I'll be researching or planning for it. I'm a big coffee drinker, so I love a coffee shop trip and I can spend many an hour walking around HobbyCraft. Otherwise, I'm visiting friends and family - particularly hanging out my little nephew!
Tell us a bit about what you have coming up? any little projects you want to tell us about.
At the moment, I am in the middle of my biggest DIY yet - renovating my new home! Expect lots of house-related DIYs on the blog. The room I'm most excited to start is the office/studio space!
Lovely to hear from Sophie about what she is getting up to and hear more about how she stays creative. You can also find The Things She makes on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, You tube and Pinterest. So plenty of places to stalk her!
See you next month!

Make it: Geometric Print
Its always good to get back to doing a bit of something you enjoy while you are hibernating for the winter and so I thought I would start back with printing. It's something I do quite a lot at work and I love, but I want to get back to doing more for myself and at home. It really is a simple thing to do on a kitchen table on a rainy afternoon and with the rise of the geometric print all over Etsy and Not on the High Street, I thought it would be the perfect introduction to printing for those who have never done it before.
You will need to think about your design so that you can make your stamps first. I kept this one very simple and decided to make triangles. Draw your design and cut the funky foam out before glue-ing the foam onto a piece of cardboard. You need something to hold onto when stamping so the cardboard works well, but it could be wood, bottle caps or corks, whatever works for you. I decided to make 3 stamps for each of my colours, but you could reuse the stamps and just give them a clean off with some water in between. Just make sure not to make them too damp or the water will make the paint too thin.
Once the stamps are made, I thought about how I wanted my print to layout and did a little sketch. You might want to do this sketch first and so you know which stamps to make but I knew I wanted to use triangles for this design and so it was just a case of how it was to be laid out.
Then get your paints out, my turquoise coloured paint was a bit too blue originally and so I added some more yellow to make it more green and mixed it up. You can use a paintbrush or sponge to add the paint onto your stamp, just make sure it has a thin layer of paint and not too thick. I would suggest keeping a spare piece of paper next to you to try out first, so that you don't ruin your finished piece.
Once you have your paint on your stamp, turn it over and press down on the paper, make sure not to twist it or it will smudge. If there is too much paint on the stamp it will feel like it is moving when you push down and so this is a good indication of too much paint.
I printed each of my colours separately, but you could do a row at a time if you would prefer.
The last colour, was my copper paint which had a different consistency and so you can see from the bottom right of the picture that it leaked from the side of the stamp on the first one - too much paint! But I quite liked it and so decided to stick with it for this print.
That's it, you are finished. Just to leave it for a good few hours for the paint to dry completely. Then you can put it in a frame, stick it up with washi tape - a firm favourite of ours or give it to someone else as a present.
You can make this as complicated or simple as you like, some triangles interlocking down the middle of the paper, or circles in all kinds of colours would work nicely too. Just make sure that if you are printing on top of another colour the top colour is darker than the bottom colour or it will show through.
It's so great to see how easy it is to make your own artwork. There really is so much of this about at the moment and so making your own unique piece is definitely that extra bit special.

Our Christmas Wishlists 2014
It is that time of year when wishlists get real! All those things you have been lusting over for the past few months are closer than usual to coming home with you, even if it is only to give as a gift to a loved one. We thought we would share with you what is on our wishlists, just in case you need any last minute ideas for your friends or family. H is up first...

It's a right old mix of items for me this year, starting with this jumper with the so cool elbow patches from ASOS, you may have seen my elbow patch tutorial on the blog a while back, but there is always room for more elbow patches! Next up is these so pretty rings from Wolf and Moon, which is one of my current favourite Jewellery makers and these little beauties don't make me itch as they are plastic rather than any metal which might have nickel in them. The DAB radio has been on my list for ages and so this one from Debenhams has caught my eye, I want to be able to play my iPod also, so this is definitely the way forward. Of course, I had to include a notebook in this wishlist, well of course and it had to be teal - my favourite colour, and from Paperchase! To carry on with the book theme is this book from Mindy Kaling, can't wait to get laughing in public. Nearly there I promise, this printer from Fujifilm is going on the list this year. I have been wanting the Fujifilm Instax for ages and then I saw this little Instax printer, that can print direct from your phone, even better, Instagram pics everywhere! Lastly, but definitely not least is this necklace from A Alicia which I saw at Renegade and then regretted not buying of course, so it needs to go on the list just for that.
I love this wire shelving unit from Oliver Bonas and I have been lusting after their tub chairs for years. I could never commit though as I knew a velvet chair wouldn't last five minutes in a house with two cats, however they have recently bought out their iconic chairs in a cotton finish. Now that I can do! Anything stag related is always a winner for me and I think this textured necklace is just gorgeous. Another year, another chance to fail at eating healthy? Well this book claims to teach you how to be healthy inside and out, we will see. A bit of motivation in the form of this Anthropologie mug wouldn't hurt either. If your going to buy me a candle let it be a Jo Malone White Jasmine and mint. I never saw what all the fuss was about until I picked one up in duty free on my way to Vegas in the summer. Now I cannot live without one burning away in my craft room. Another resolution in the making, I am aiming to be more organised in 2015 so a pretty planner will, no doubt, help me along the way. I am hoping for this one from the new collection by 'A Beautiful Mess'. Last but not least is this bag which I have had on my etsy.com wishlist for ages. It is so beautiful and super practical with lots of hidden pockets for super organised stuff storage.
This is what we are wishing for, what is on your wish list this year? Are you buying or making any special gifts for anyone? Are you planning any experience gifts for your loved ones, like days out or trips away? Let us know in the comments below what you have planned, we won't tell, Promise!

#HandmadeChristmas Gift Guide
This year as well as endeavouring to make alot of my Christmas gifts for my family and friends I am planning on only buying anything I don't make from independent crafts people. Some of my favourite places to shop are at craft fairs and there are tonnes to visit this time of year. We will be heading to Renegade later this month to check out some of our designer maker friends, but if you can't make it out to a fair, there is no excuse... you can always buy handmade online. I have chosen some of my top picks from my go-to online marketplaces.
Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Are you making any gifts this year? Which craft fairs do you like to visit?? Let us know in the comments what you have planned.

Makers Month: Folksy Finds
Cuppa Tote bag by Hello Dodo / Hedgehog earrings by Ginger Pickle / Custard Cream Brooch by Laura Lane / Waistcoat baby grow by This is Lullaby / Flying ducks by Prince Design UK / Best of British print by We Laugh Indoors / Union Jack Pillbox hat by Maynard Millinery
I think Folksy gets the raw end of the stick sometimes when comparing it to other sites of it's kind. I am going to confess that in the past I have not been a frequent visitor to (or even a fan of) the British handmade market place Folksy.com, always heading for Etsy or Not on the High Street as my 'go to' for all things designer/maker. I feel I and many others have been doing the site an injustice.
I have in the past felt that it was a bit 'village craft fair' or 'Homemade' as opposed to 'Handmade' (there is a difference). However I have been scouring the site lately for home grown UK talent and have been very pleasantly surprised!
I was always under the impression that the site was full of 'Folk' style crafts, but knowing that some of my favourite makers have recently opened shops on Folksy made me take a closer look. They are in very good company, there are some absolutely beautiful hand-crafted items available.
I have spoken about presentation before in my 'What Will it Take to Make Crafting Cool' post earlier this year and I still feel that poor photography lets a lot of Brits down when it comes to showing off their products on many of these sites. However I have discovered some really great new makers to add to my ever growing Wishlist.
Do you sell on Folksy or Etsy or NOTHS? I would love to know your thoughts on why you like where you sell, Why you chose that platform etc. Let me know in the comments below.
