How Blogging Can Help your Handmade Business - Feature in Craftseller

If you head down to your newsagent this weekend, don't forget to pick up the October issue of Craftseller magazine, not just because it's a great crafty mag, but you may see an article with some familiar faces.

We were asked a few months ago to weigh in on the subject of how having a blog can help your handmade business.  Something we love to talk about!

The piece by Karen Dunn includes some other amazing Girl boss bloggers, the lovely Kat and Kat founders of Blogtacular, Camilla Westgaard from the Folksy Blog and Alice Tams from Birds in hats.  I know we are biased, but it is well worth a read if you are in any doubt as to whether blogging is for you and your brand.  Spoiler alert.  It totally is!

As if you needed another reason to head out and grab a copy there is also a great interview with Amanda Overs of I Can Make Shoes, who's workshops have been on our wishlist for ages.  Definitely on our Christmas list now!

We would love to know if you have a handmade business or brand and how your blog has impacted it, or if you find social media and blogging just a bit overwhelming?  What have you learnt about yourself or your customers via your blog?

Our Favourite Posts 2014

2014 is almost over and what a year we have had here on Live it. Love it. Make it. We have more of you reading our blog than ever before and it makes us feel truly humbled that so many of you are enjoying what we share here. We would not get the opportunities that we have had this year if it wasn't for all your support.  Before 2015 gets into full swing we wanted to go back and remember some of our personal favourite posts from the year.

Jan - Understanding a Dress Pattern
The Series of posts I (Sammy) wrote about how to navigate your way through a paper pattern has been one of our most viewed series this year and one of my favourite to write. Are there any other things like this that you struggle with? Let us know and we might be able to turn it into a post for you.

Feb - Make it: Ginger Biscuits
These biscuits are AMAZING and so simple to make, they had to make it into a top list somewhere. They would make a great Christmas Party something to take too, although be warned, they are rock hard after a day due to the golden syrup in them.  Bake them in the morning and they will be great for that evening.

March - Our Liberty Adventure
In March we got to visit Liberty thanks to the lovely girls of the New Craft Society to hear about Liberty fabrics and have afternoon tea. It was a lovely experience and one we will never forget.

April - Our Tea and Crafting Adventure
We loved going to see the Tea and Crafting workshop space for the first time and have been again since.  In April it was to learn machine embroidery though and it was great fun, we instantly became hooked!

May - Blogtacular
We headed to London for our first blog convention.  We had such an amazing time, got to meet some of our blogging idols and made some lovely new friends.  Despite H and I both being rather poorly all weekend.

June - Our 500th post and OMG we are in Mollie Makes
Well, we couldn't do this without mentioning one of our biggest moments this year.  We got a project featured in Mollie Makes! And an interview too, it's still exciting and we loved being part of it, fingers crossed we can do it again soon.

July - Brush Up Those Blogging Skills
For Me (Sammy) July was all about learning, I shared my favourite Blogging e-courses that I have taken in the past and learnt some new crafts on my road trip to Austria.

August - How we Wear New Look Special
We loved working with New Look and this is one of my (H) favourite How we Wear posts of the year, we look so glam!  Plus we got to work with one of our favourite brands - what's not to like!

September - Make it: Cable Cosy
By far our most popular tutorial of this year and my (Sammy) favourite has to be the cable cosy we made in Makers month. With the help of Dashwood Studio's gorgeous fabric and a need to store all my cables in one place this cosy is my favourite post of the year.

October - Make it: Spooky Spiders and Vampire Bats
Who doesn't love some spiders and bats for Halloween! Such a simple make to decorate the place or just be a fun make with the kids for the time of year.

November - Sew Crafty Online is Now Open
On a personal note (Sammy) opening my shop to a whole new customer base made my November, heck it made my year!  After working on it for so long it was such a relief to have the site go live. We have had such a lovely response and lots of lovely sales.

December - Gift Wrapped
The best part of Christmas for us is the giving of presents and what better way for us to enjoy it, than some amazing gift wrapping.  The gift is just part of it!

Wow! what a year it has been! What have been your highlights from 2014? and what are you looking forward to next year?

Love it: Brush up those Blogging Skills

I am a person that really enjoys learning at my own speed and from the comfort of my own home so I am a big fan of e-courses. I have taken a few in my time online and I plan on taking many many more in the future. I am going on a road trip to Austria with Steve in a week or so and we have a few day trips to go on when we get there but we also have a lot of driving to do and a couple of chill out days and so I thought I would take the opportunity to brush up my blogging know how whilst we are away.

Today I thought I would let you know some of my favourite places to find useful e-courses on the net.

The first is a course that everyone needs to take by the gorgeous Ann-Marie of annmarieloves.com Make it happen: A guide to getting it done and feeling good about it Who doesn't need to learn how to do this better right? Get your butt over to Ann-Marie's shop and get learning!

The girls at A Beautiful Mess have just re-launched their epic 'Blog Life' and 'Blog Design Love' courses in their shiny new online store. Despite having taken both these courses in the past I have signed up for both the new versions already. I love the way these girls teach and they now have a bunch of crash courses available too, Macaroons 101 anyone?
Check out Blog Life here.

This offering is one class in particular, but a site that has changed the way I learn. Skillshare is a site chocca-block with creative e-courses, with everything from Photoshop to Calligraphy.  If there is something you want to learn about then there will no doubt be a course here for you. The one that I have loved the most, was by one of my favourite bloggers Brittany Mehlhoff of Paper & Stitch. This course 'The How to on How tos' teaches you how to create tutorials for your own blog. Check it out, it has some great photography tips in there too.

Make Your Day is a download from Lovely Indeed's Chelsea and The Paper Mama's Chelsea. It is more of a e-book but a great read none the less, a great DIY master-class with tips, tricks and projects to keep you DIY-ing all day long.

This Photography e-course from the brains behind Blogtacular, Kat Molesworth and Kat Goldin, is a great alternative to heading to your local evening class to brush up on your DSLR skills. Manual Overdrive (awesome name) is designed to take your photography to the next level and you know from the Kat's blogs, Housewife Confidential and Slugs on the Refrigerator that they know what they are talking about. Sign up soon though as these amazing ladies are heading on to bigger and better things, but the instant access courses will only be available until the end of the year.

Blogshop is THE Photoshop boot-camp. Run by the amazing Bri ( DesignLoveFest) and Angela (Angela and Ithyle) it is famous for its photography styling sessions and EPIC goodies bags. The best news is that it is now available as an online course. It is also open to us PC users as well as apple lovelies. Seriously best news ever!!

The epitome of blogging workshops is surely Rock and Roll Bride's 'The Blogcademy' H and I have been saving up to both go to this since we started blogging so we were super excited that the girls have now released online video sessions ( some free and some for a small fee) so we can watch them whilst we carry on saving. I love that they have split them up so you can pick and choose which modules you work on first. Awesome!

I hope this has inspired you to learn something new this summer. Have you ever taken an e-course before and did you enjoy it? Do let us know we are always on the look out for new things to learn.

Live it: Blogtacular 2014

Last weekend, when quite frankly the UK was cold, windy and damp - there was an explosion of creativity, colour and people (mainly women) for the inaugural Blogtacular at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in London.  We had never been to an event like this before so we had no idea what to expect... we were blown away!

Both of us had been following Kat and Kat's respective blogs for a while before the conference was announced so we knew that this was going to be the most awesome blogging event of 2014 and it did not disappoint. As the speakers were announced they just got better and better, the lead up to the event was an exciting time finding out who of our blogging friends were going to be there and which of our blogging idols we were going to get a chance to meet.

The Friday night kicked off with a goody bag of epic proportions designed and printed by the amazing Zeena  Shah including gifts from the HambledonBetty and Walter, Tigerlilly Quinn, LollipopLadybird Likes and all the event sponsors including Mail Chimp, B&Q and the Lovely Mollie Makes followed by a drinks reception and book signing.

The opening key note was given by a blogger who has been an inspiration to us for many years, Joy Cho, a designer and mother among the long list of accomplishments this lady has under her belt.

"You are not just a blogger"
                                                                Joy Cho

Day two was an intense learning explosion, packed full of workshops and lectures. We especially loved hearing from Tilly (Tilly and the Buttons) and Vicky (editor at Kyle Books) who spoke about going from blogger to author and the secrets of just how to write that book.

"Self Promotion, not to be confused with over sharing"
                                                                                                          Anne Ditmeyer

The Editors panel including Lara ( Mollie Makes) Caroline Rowland (91 magazine) Kate Carter (Life and Style at the Guardian) and Heather Young (freelance interiors journalist for IPC magazines) was a real treat. We got to hear their tips for pitching to publications and an insight into what they look for in contributors to their magazines.

We were hugely inspired by the fab duo behind Mini Moderns, Mark and Keith who took us through their top tips for branding and design.  Let's face it, it was nice to have a few guys around the place! Although there was a few in the audience, but we never got to meet them to find out who they were. If your reading this guys, say hello!

Even in between all the brilliant lectures and workshops there was no time for a creative lull, there were stalls and activities from sponsers Thomson Holidays and B&Q.  Blackwell's had an array of creative books to read and buy from all the speakers and more to keep those juices flowing and the B&Q team helped us avoid that 3pm slump with a little help from The Meringue Girls.

We felt that the closing keynote from Natalie Lue (Baggage Reclaim) was the perfect way to end a weekend filled with inspirational and motivational advice from the leaders in our field. She spoke so wonderfully about not comparing yourself to other people and that EVERYONE has self-doubt, but you know what you deal with it and move on!  Natalie really is a force to be reckoned with and definitely gave us some Big Lessons to learn from!  She may well have inspired H to write that book about weddings too, so watch this space!

"You will have more ideas than time, this is ok"
                                                                                             Natalie Lue

We both headed home with our heads buzzing with ideas and inspiration, as we are sure all our fellow attendees and speakers did too. It also made us have some hard but important conversations about what we both want for the future of Live it. Love it. Make it... All good, promise.

If you are now totally jealous that you couldn't make it to the best blogging event of the year, don't worry, sign up to the Blogtacular mailing list to be in with the chance to grab a virtual ticket to be able to go online and watch videos of some of the sessions. There was a rumour that the first few UK based purchasers of virtual tickets would get one of the goody bags too!

To Kat and Kat,
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for dreaming big and envisioning the absolute delight that was Blogtacular. We learnt so much and are so excited for the future of our blog thanks to your hard work and determination to make your vision becoming a reality. We have added "To speak at Blogtacular" to our list of blogging life goals.

H and Sammy

Our Blogtacular Wishlist

H and I are off to Blogtacular next weekend for two days of networking, learning and blogging fun. There are loads of amazing bloggers and journalists scheduled to speak, as well as workshops and networking events so we need to be comfortable but smart enough to meet some of our blogging idols and piers. We have been trying to get ourselves ready by making lists of things we need to take with us, and more importantly what we are going wear!

Day one is about finding out where we are going to be, meeting all of our fellow attendees and some of the amazing speakers. We have both gone with neutral basics and added pops of colour, H with a bag and me with my dress.

H, Day One: CardiganNecklaceBootsBagDress.

Sammy, Day One: Dress: Boots: Ipad sleeve: Necklace.

Day two is about learning and more importantly comfort, so we have both gone for statement accessories to embellish our cosy outfits.
H Day Two: Jeans: Necklace: Shoes: BagTop.

Sammy, Day Two: TopBagNecklaceShoesTrousers.

Are you heading to Blogtacular? What have you planned on wearing or taking with you? Let us know in the comments below. There are still tickets available if you are a blogger or want to learn more about blogging, or if you are thinking about starting a blog, head over to the event page for more details.

Now, all we need is our notebooks and we are good to go!

Sammy & H, xxx
