Makers Month: DIY Colour Block Tray with Claireabellemakes

We are finishing up Makers Month in style with a beautiful DIY from our best blogging buddy Claireabellemakes.  She has a pretty and practical tray tutorial, any excuse for afternoon tea!  Take it away Claire.

Like most creative types, I usually always have a cup of tea in the studio while I am working. So when H and Sammy asked me to share a DIY with you all, I decided to make a useful tray to carry drinks from the kitchen to my studio which is upstairs. I’ve already been using this so much, especially now it’s autumn, and I need lots of warming drinks and biscuits!

You will need: Small wooden chopping board or block Painters Tape,  Acrylic paint, Mod Podge,  Paintbrush,  Door handles and screws, Power Drill (or super strong glue) and Screwdriver

Step 1
Tape off your board to create your preferred geometric design. Paint with the acrylic paint and leave to dry. I decided to leave a strip of the original wood unpainted.

Step 2
Once the paint is dry, paint 1-2 coats of Mod Podge on top. This will act as a sealant, so your tray is protected from spills and crumbs!

Step 3
Place your door handles on the outer edge of the wooden block and use a sharpie pen to mark the drill holes. Pre-drill the holes using a drill bit that matches the size of the screw. If you don’t have a drill, skip this step and I’ll share an alternative in the next step!

Step 4
Using a screwdriver, fix your door handles onto the wooden block. These will become your tray handles! If you aren’t using the drill and screws, you can super glue the handles to the wood. I recommend E6000 for this, but please use it in a well-ventilated area and leave to dry overnight.

Now your tray is ready for carrying your tea and snacks from room to room. Of course, it can also be used for decorative purposes too.

I hope you enjoyed this simple DIY today – don’t forget to share with us if you make your own version!

That's all for this Autumn's Makers Month. It has been an awesome four weeks getting some insider tips with just a handful of our favourite people. Thanks to all who shared their experience with us all.
