Our Fashion and Textile Museum Adventure

Now you may have noticed that we both have a bit of a thing about fabric and pattern!  So it will come as no surprise that when we found out their was an Artists Textiles exhibition on at the Fashion & Textile Museum in London, we hot-footed it up there.

For those who have never heard of it, it's a small museum around the corner from London Bridge Station (near Borough Market too for an added foodie bonus) and let's just quote the website here:

"The Fashion and Textile Museum is a cutting edge centre for contemporary fashion, textiles and jewellery in London. Founded by iconic British designer Zandra Rhodes, the centre showcases a programme of changing exhibitions exploring elements of fashion, textile and jewellery as well as the Academy which runs courses for creative students and businesses.

Situated in the heart of fashionable Bermondsey Village, in a fantastic building designed by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, the FTM aims not just to display and collect items relating to fashion, jewellery and textile design, but to offer inspiration to a new generation of creatives. Now redeveloped and operated by Newham College, the museum is a hub of learning, ideas and networking for the fashion and jewellery industry."

Just about sums it up really.

The Museum as you can see is a paying museum, but with a National Art Pass you can always get a bit extra off the ticket price, so if you are a museum lover, it might be worth buying a card.

Anyway, H has been before to a Sanderson Exhibition a few years back and so it was a great excuse to go back and see what treats were in store this time.  The Artist Textiles exhibition (to once again quote the website) "traces the history of 20th century art in textiles. Highlights include work by Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Sonia Delaunay, Raoul Dufy, Barbara Hepworth, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, Ben Nicholson and Andy Warhol.

The exhibition features examples of key European and American art movements: Fauvism, Cubism, Constructivism, Abstraction, Surrealism and Pop Art; as well as the work of leading fashion designers and manufacturers. Artist Textiles shows how ordinary people were once able to engage with modern art in a personal and intimate way through their clothing and home furnishings. With over 200 rare pieces, many of which have not been on public display before."

When we walked in, we walked through a small room and a corridor which started us on our journey to learning about Sonia Delaunay and Salvador Dali pieces, to name but a few.  One thing that struck me was that there was so much crossover between artists and designers in the 20th century, which seems to have been separated in recent years, but I really feel that we are starting to go back to that way of working, to Artists being fashion designers, architects planning exhibitions and designers making art.

The main exhibition room itself is two floors and this is where we started to see mannequins with dresses on and large pieces on the walls covering artists such as Picasso, Andy Warhol and of course Zandra Rhodes herself.  It was lovely to see items made up with the fabrics and the fabric pieces themselves, some of the lighting could have been a bit better for them to be shown in their best light, but it is difficult to get light on everything.  Of course there is the added concerns of fading fabrics also, so that may have been why.

These fabrics above were definitely cute and quirky and have the very 60's appeal.  Clothes are starting to get this treatment again with big bold prints being showcased more and more on the high street.

Overall, the Artists Textiles exhibition was very interesting and for fabric lovers it was a feast for the eyes.  I think for someone who didn't know much about the artists themselves it would have been difficult to pick up on what the artists were famous for outside of these pieces.  This exhibition was geared more for those who already know artists and what they are known for.  It is hard to half every little piece of information on display, but I think for the fanatic there could have been more in depth knowledge gained and for the novice it was pitched too high.

It did inspire me to go home and draw some patterns and look at all my 50's and 60's pattern books again.  I love the era and it reminded me why I love it.

The exhibition is open until Saturday 17th May and so you still have chance to go and see it.  If you do go, let us know what you think?  Or if you have been to see anything else like this, let us know in the comments below so we can check it out.

Who's Who: Mister Peebles

Our first Who's Who of 2014 is someone that has caught our eye and our hearts, many a time.  Their quirky prints and cards have just that right amount of humour and you may well just recognise Owl Capone further down the page from H's instagram feed!  They have just been stocked in Liberty's too, exciting!!!

Fathers Day Gift Ideas with Not on the High Street

Aaaggghh Dad's can be so hard to buy for!! It's Fathers Day on Sunday (hands up who forgot...or gave up because it was too hard to find a gift and resorted to a chocolate orange!)
A place I have always found to have very speedy delivery times is Not on the High Street.com they have saved my butt on more than one occasion for last minuet unique gifts. I headed over yesterday and had a surf of their manly offerings, here are my picks of gifts for all those Daddy's girls out there.

If you haven't got time to order anything, why not use these ideas to make something simple. A personalised print can be created on your computer with Word, Publisher or Photoshop with some fancy fonts, I like dafont.com  for free funky fonts. You can use a Sharpie to decorate mugs with your Dad's initial or a cute phrase. Use manly colours and DIY a phone case. Again use your computer to make a simple wrapper to go around his favourite bar of chocolate.

I'm off to create a print for My Dad, which says something other than 'I'm a Grumpy Old Man'
I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Love it: Christmas Wishlists

With it being the 1st of December we thought it only right to our Christmas wishlists with you

No.1 Top of My (Sammy's) list is a Silhouette Cameo computerised paper/fabric cutting machine. I used to have a have a slice machine, which I have recently sold to make way for one of these. I need this in my life!

No.2 on my list is theses Virtue stacking rings, there are hundreds in their range to choose from, these three are my faves. I am a little bit of a fan of stars, I have lots of star pendants and charms, I even have a tattoo of five stars on my back.

No.3 are the yummy Sweetie Fur Lined Slipper Boots from my favourite high street store Accessorize! My current (last years Christmas present) pair have lasted me a whole year, I wear my slippers A LOT! But now have rather large holes in both feet. These look so cozy and I love the pompoms.

My last two are definitely on my 'DIY' list to have a go at in the new year if I don't get the real thing.
No.4 on my list is from a store that is well loved in the US and becoming a massive brand in the UK too, Anthropologie.  H is responsible for introducing me to the wonders of their existence on a trip to their Regent Street store a few years ago. I have an 'S' mug from their original range, but I just love these floral designed homegrown monogram mugs, and the 'S' is in such a cute teal and red colour combo.

No.5 Is from my current designer crush Kate Spade. I love this gold spot Mobile phone case, the perfect mix of Glam and kooky, If this isn't in my stocking though I feel a DIY version on the cards!

No.1 on my list is to go any see Matilda at the Theatre.  There are 3 main reasons: I love Roald Dahl and my favourite book was Matilda; I loved the 90's Film with Bob Hoskins and I love Tim Minchin - who wrote the  new Music and Lyrics.  So what's not to look forward to!

No.2 on my list is the House of Elliot Series boxset.  I loved it when I was younger watching it with my mum and last year BBC3 had a complete re-run and I loved it all over again.  I loved the clothes and that the 2 women were Fashion designers - one of my 'what do you want to be when you grow up' jobs.

No.3 is my new favourite thing. It is a machine built in the 80's for Japanese Children to be able to print on a small scale - similar to screen printing.  Japanese Gocco Machines are apparently very rare and have stopped making them, but I will be scouring Ebay and the world for one of these beauties and maybe one Christmas I may well find one!

No.4 is this Lisa Jones Studio Cushion.  Now I love checking out cushions but don't actually have many at home and that may be more to do with house-sharing than anything else.  But if I did have cushions, this would be the one I want as it has an Owl on it and I am a bit obsessed by birds but especially owls at the moment!

And finally at No.5 is my all time favourite thing at Christmas time and all year round in fact.  I love mint chocolate and there is something about Matchmakers that makes me feel very Christmassy!

If you have your own to share, then please post a comment below.  We would love to see them.

Love it Christmas Style
