Liam Hemsworth Drawing & Sammy's on Tumblr

I haven't talked about drawing on here for a while and I just finished this one of Liam Hemsworth at the weekend, so I thought it would be a good time to share.

I have been working on this one for the longest time ever, like months, I kept picking it up and putting it down again. I'm still not totally happy with it now, but sometimes I just have to step away for a while, I'm sure when I look at it in a month or so I will really like it. Does that ever happen to you? I sometimes get it when I make clothes or buy them after wish-listing them for ages, I have to not look at them for a while until I rediscover them and love them again, just me??

I have also joined Tumblr, just for my drawings. Still not sure if I like it or not, but I wasn't sure about twitter at first (still not entirely sold) so I'm sure it will grow on me.
Are you on Tumblr? I'm trying to find some good people to follow, any suggestions??

Back to Liam Hemsworth.  I chose to draw him in particular because of ' The Hunger Games' you may remember I have already done a drawing of Jennifer Lawence back in 2011.  I am so excited for the next movie, I am hoping to seeing more of Liam in this one, I vaguely remember more of Gale in the second book. Our friend Verity (who originally recommended the books to me) sent me a link to the newest trailer for 'Catching Fire' the other day (we geek out over Hunger Games with each other via what's app on a pretty regular basis) It looks awesome.

I am hoping to take Steve to see 'The Wolverine' at the weekend, we love the X-men films, not to mention a little Hugh Jackman shaped eye candy is always nice.
What Movies are you looking forward to catching?

Love it: Illustration

Illustration has to be one of my favourite artistic genres.  It is beautifully diverse and encompasses so many different techniques and skills. 'Illustration' is traditionally used for books, magazines and print copy, but are often beautiful works of art in their own right.
I have a couple favourite artists right now and recently I have discovered a few new crushes.

Katie Rodgers is the artist behind the blog Paper Fashion and has been commissioned by some of the best designers around including  Kate Spade, Coach, Alicia Keys, Stuart Weitzman, Paul Mitchell, Target, Nabisco, and Lucky Magazine among others. Her Fashion watercolours are just stunning, she also uses textural touches like glitter, crystals and tulle to embellish her work. You can view her work and sketches on her blog and shop her originals and prints here too.

Esra is a freelance artist based in Oslo, I found her work whilst searching Instagram and fell in love. Her dreamy watercolours in rainbow tones are beautiful. You can purchase her work at her on-line shop. Her newest skull paintings are Amazing!
She has worked with Vogue (China), Nylon Mag, Levi's, Nike and Glamour to name a few.

I found Ella Masters through her blog. A self confessed creator of pretty things and novelty jumper collector, she is a young talent who is destined for great things.  I simply adore her tattoo'd men with their burly beards! You can buy her pieces through her Etsy store and her blog

An illusive artist who goes by Mr Peebles, is a new discovery of mine but I already own one of his prints, 'Keeping it reel' is up at my shop, just too cute for words. I know H is a fan of this guy too as she was literally jumping up and down when she got 'Owl Capone' in her goodie bag from the 'We Make London' party we went to a few weeks back.
You can find his work through his website and through independent stockists worldwide, as well as currently in the We Make London Pop up shop in Camden Lock Market.

This is illustration on another level. Yulia, aside from being an amazing artist with conventional materials, she is a paper quilling WIZARD! The first image is one of her traditional works but the other three are all created with thin strips of coloured paper, painstakingly curled and pinched to create these amazing images. I love her use of negative space, her use of colour and typography. Yulia has created commissions for some of the worlds largest corporations and publications including Starbucks, Westfield, Orange, Cadbury, Time Out London and the New York Times magazine. If you only click one link today make it this one and check out her website to see soooo many more of her beautiful works.

I hope that this has inspired you to search for some artist that you admire and to check out more works from these super talented lot. Tell me about your favourites, I would love to check them out.

I'm off to get my quilling supplies out of my mums loft!

Newest drawing 'Suits'

Yesterday I shared my current favourite TV shows, one of which is Suits. My posts about my drawings seem to be popular with you guys so I thought as we were on the subject I would share my latest drawing of the two stars of the show Patrick J Adams and Gabriel Macht.

Some of you have asked about what materials and techniques I use for my drawings, so let me fill you in.

I use a mechanical pencil, I have a few different ones but at the moment I'm using a Pentel twist-erase one because it has a nice rubber grip and I have 4B 0.5mm leads in it.
I use a fine tipped rubber by Tombow Mono Zero which is really helpful to rub out really small areas and fine lines. For blending I use Derwent paper stumps.
The paper I use is Bristol board, super smooth paper.
Some people have asked how I get My drawings from the page to my computer, well I have a scanner. Most of my drawings are A4 or smaller so our HP printer/scanner is fine. I have to say it's really hard to get all the detail that I draw from the page to the screen, the scanner can never really pic up every line or the subtle shading in some areas, but I have managed to get the settings right for mine so they scan pretty well. There is no shortcut for this, it totally depends on your scanner settings and your computers settings too. It took me months of fiddling with settings to get it to the right ones for me, and my drawings.
To get proportions right when I'm drawing I use a grid system, I usually print off two versions of my reference photo and draw a grid over one of them to get the facial features in the right place. I draw a corresponding grid on my blank paper and draw in the main features of the person I am drawing. When they are in lightly in pencil I rub out all of the grid lines and move on to using the second print out to start working on the details and shading.  I would say I spend an averaged of 8-10 hours on a drawing over the space of three or four days, sometimes more, often I will start a drawing and then leave it for a few days, then go back to it.
I draw for fun, It relaxes me, I draw for me and I don't sell my fan art drawings.
You can check out some of my other drawings on my deviantart gallery

What do you do that relaxes you? That thing that's just for you?

Love it: Pencil Drawing

My pencil drawing of Leonardo Di Caprio

My pencil drawing of Jennifer Lawrence

As well as being a Sewer/crafter I am also, I suppose an Artist, I find it weird to call myself that. I have always thought of artists to be a rather bohemian crowd, creating and imagining their world as they go. Most of us as children are given the impression that an artist stands at a canvas with a paint brush in hand, as I grew up I realised that there are many different types of  'Artist' and that a paint brush or indeed a canvas are not always involved. I am not a paint brush and canvas girl, I have tried it, and although I can handle a paint brush with reasonable dexterity {thanks to hours of teaching from my Grandpa} A pencil is my weapon of choice.

I have also learned that flowers nor Landscapes are not where my love of drawing lies, I love drawing people. Even in other artists work I'm drawn most of all to paintings and drawings of People, Portraits.  H and I took a trip to the National Portrait Gallery last week, we were there to see a collection of photographs of Marilyn Monroe {which were Gorgeous by the way} but I was more amazed by the contemporary portraits collection, one artist in particular, whose work has amazed me before was Jason Brooks

The most stunning thing about this painting... yes its a painting not a photograph, is its size. To give you some idea this picture below is a photo of the artist and subject standing in front of it at its unveiling.

Photorealism is a genre of art that fascinates me, I have a Deviantart gallery where I show off my latest drawings, my favourites gallery is filled with others work, the vast majority of which are pencil drawings by other artists.

Another artist who has been in the news alot latley is Kelvin Okafor his pencil work is astounding, not surprising that he has won several awards of late for his work.

I love drawing, I don't do it often, but when I do it gives me an amazing feeling. I like drawing celebrities, so I would say that my work was really fan art, but it is art none the less.

My pencil drawings of Tom Hardy and Jensen Ackles

Anyone who commits pencil/pen/paint to paper/canvas/fabric is an artist, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Art is for everyone, by everyone, it is not elitist if we don't let it be.

The drawings I do are for me, I don't sell them or take commissions, I will occasionally draw one for a friend {H is the proud owner of  my drawing of Tom Hardy} as a gift, but that is it. My drawing is something that I do to relax, some people love a long bath or shopping {which I also do} for me sitting down with a pencil and a piece of paper and sketching a persons face until they look like who they are meant to be, is the best therapy.

What is your thing? movies? sports? crafts? It's Valentines Day this week, aside from a person, what do you Love that is just for you?

Live it. Olympic Torch, Love it. Hunger Games, Make it. Wicked Willow Weaving

Last Thursday I managed to pack quite a lot of random activities in to one day, I was the very epitome of Live it Love it Make it! Just not sure that all in one day is such a good idea, I am still trying to recover.
Anyway, the first of my activities was thanks to the Lovely Maria of Happy Cakes! fame. She invited me to attend a willow weaving workshop in her garden. I have tried many crafts in my time but I have never done anything like this so jumped at the chance, in addition of tea and cake was a big deciding factor.
I arrived secateurs in hand and was greeted by Maria and a cup of tea. Susan our teacher for the morning, took us through what we were aiming for and let us choose our materials, I went for the shorter dark willow as my base, motivated by size and ability to fit it in the car, I began to whittle the ends in order to spear them in to the ground and be able to weave around them freely.

Maria and Steph getting their standing willow, whittled and in to place.

A photo by Steph Smith of me beside my willow frame. Do you like my wellies???

When we were all set, Susan showed us the fun part, the weaving,
making sure we had the right technique to get going.
We used green willow and began by bending one strand then weaving alternately in and out, making sure to keep the spacing as even as possible
Not as easy as it sounds...

Never the less, our first layers started to take shape, this is Susan's, you can tell right, super neat and tidy.

Finishing of with a neat tuck in and then on to the middle layer, remembering to pull it in a little tighter to start the inward curve.
The nicest thing about getting together with a group and doing an activity like this is you get a chance to have a natter as you work, it was really nice to get to chat with some lovely new friends and friends I already knew, like Steph, one of my lovely customers at Sew Crafty and Deborah from Craft Coop.
By this time my obelisk was taking shape, and I was getting jibes about being neat, not some thing I am usually known for.

As we all finished off our second layer it seemed like a good time for a break, and nothing better to keep us going than (the now famous) Lemon drizzle, Yummy Carrot cake and a nice cup of tea. Yes I did have both, it would have been rude not to.
Also I would like to point out I am mega jealous of Maria's crockery collection, everything from Blue and white wear to Cath K! If you need somewhere to store any of it whilst you have your Kitchen done Maria, my house is open :)

After tea, time for top layer and tying off, by this time the garden was looking very impressive, everyone had done such a good job, and everyone had really enjoyed themselves. Even Maria's gorgeous Chickens were impressed!

I uploaded this to Instagram on my way back to work, a cute little collection of the days stages. I'm @SamanthaClaridge if you want to follow me there. I love my obelisk, so much so that I have covered it in Easter goodies and stuck it in the Window at work, and it has been much admired.
Thank you to Susan for teaching us all and thank you to Maria for inviting me to come along, and to all the Ladies for such a nice 'Make it' morning
All of us proud willow weavers posing with our achievements. Lovely I think you will agree.
For the next few hours I had to have my work head on, the Sun was shining so we flung the doors open at the shop whilst I got my head stuck in to customers questions, sales and VAT.

'Living it'
By 6pm it was time to put my community hat on and head to Maidenhead town hall for a meeting about the new parking scheme and the Portas pilot bids and Olympic excitement!
Maidenhead is putting in a bid to become a Mary Portas Pilot Town, Yay!
And as our train station is an official Olympic arrival venue for the Dorney lake events we also are on the Olympic torch route, quite excited as it will be running right passed the front of our shop!!

By 7.30 my head was full of ideas, but It was time for me to meet up with my friend Verity, to go and watch a preview screening of 'The Hunger Games'
V had recommended the books to me last year on holiday, and I had ended up reading all three in a week. We had both been waiting in anticipation for the first of the movies... and we were not disappointed!
'LOVING IT'

I don't normally share my drawings with many people, but as it is appropriate I thought I would share my pencil drawing of Jennifer Lawrence, starlet of Hunger Games, with our lovely Blog followers.

So it was a busy day, but a great one.
I wish I could live it, love it and make it every day!

Much Love
