Myth Busting: Blogging

Despite being bloggers for nearly 5 years now we haven't ever really written anything about blogging. We thought it was about time that we did a little post about the things that people think we do and about blogging and bloggers in general. Those blogging myths, if you like. It is always interesting to see what people think about what you do and everyone has a different take on it I am sure, but these are just some of the myths we thought should be busted!

Myth #1: Everyone has a journalism background.
Not everyone starts their blog as part of a journalism degree or as a way to get free clothing when they are cash strapped.  Many blogs are now started earlier and earlier and in the UK, the fashion and beauty bloggers and vloggers are kings and queens.  Not everyone who starts a blog thinks that they are great at writing. We started with a idea and have learnt about our writing styles along the way - probably still learning there - which is no bad thing. Sammy is still terrible at spelling!  Getting your ideas down and relating to your audience is key, but you really don't need to have taken a degree in it or worked in publishing to do that.

Myth #2: Your going to earn loads of money from your blog.
Lots of people think that we get free stuff and get paid lots for what we do.  Not true.  Obviously that would be lovely, a great way to add to our day job income.  However making a blog work, takes time and hard work.  We have been to many talks and discussions about this and it really depends on each person, but just making money from writing a blog is unusual.  The money comes from advertising, writing for other people and other opportunities that come from having a blog a lot of the time.  Sometimes brands send you items to review, that in itself has a responsibility attached.  You don't want to give a good review if you don't actually like it and also, would you really use it if you were paying for it?  Just because it is free, doesn't mean its a good brand match for you and as lovely as freebies are, they do not pay the rent!

Myth #3: We go to amazing events all the time.
We can only speak of personal experience here, we both have quite full on day jobs, which means we can't go to the opening of every envelope in town, we also don't live in a big City and so we have to pick and choose the events we go to carefully.  Also, we don't always get invited!  We just are not in uber blogger status yet, I know, hard to believe hey!  We would love to be invited and attend more events and meet more bloggers. This is definitely on the networking wishlist.  We also want to go to events that we really want to go to and sometimes we just can't do it which is a shame, but luckily social media always gives us an eye into what went on which helps.

Myth #4:  Blogging is just fun, doesn't take anytime at all.
Blogging is really fun, however to make your blog successful you need to put the time and effort in.  If you just want to write something down every now and again, by all means start a blog, just don't expect to become a blogging superstar overnight.  Anyone can start a blog, its so simple, you just have to have something to say and commit to doing it.  However, if you want to make it something you are proud of, it takes good photography skills, ideas and all of that spare time that you have.  There are two of us and it can be a balancing act with jobs, personal lives and our blog, but we want it to be something that will continue to grow, which means many Sundays spent doing tutorials, many weekends checking out new fun things to do and then stopping every 2 minutes to take photographs and also blog meetings in the pub.  I am not going to lie, they all sound ace, but it can eat into your time with other people and so be prepared.

Myth #5:  We all have amazing homes.
You really do need to see behind the camera.  We move, polish and pile up our daily lives, just to get that perfect shot of a white background for the tutorial.  We have a habit of choosing a little spot halfway between the bedroom and the bathroom or nearest to a window, to get the best light and a nice even surface.  We really do not live our lives like you see it on camera, so don't panic.  Most of us have quite normal homes that mean the clutter and chaos that is around, just gets shoved to the side, but it wouldn't be quite the same for you to think that we are like mere mortals would it?

Any bloggers out there agree, what would be your top myth you would like busted?  Let us know in the comments below.

Live it: Paperchase SS15 Event

H and I have worshipped at the doors of Paperchase Tottenham Court Road for more than 15 years. Four floors of stationary, pens, paper and gifts who would not want to be a paper chaser? You can imagine our delight when an invite hit our inbox to head over to TCR and view their Spring/Summer 2015 line and have some Christmas crafting fun, we literally squealed.

Last Tuesday evening we made our way up to the crafting area at the top of the store and were met by the PR and some of the design team. after a welcome drink we headed over to have fun with glitter with the lovely Martine Arty. They have a bunch of workshops going on in the lead up to Christmas at the flagship store, head over to the #imadethis page on their website for more details.

We got to make Christmas decorations, basically we got to play with amazing paper, glue and glitter for an hour, it was awesome!

Then they let us loose on the new collections. The lovely Puja took us around and talked us through some of the pieces. We are so excited to get our hands on some of these goodies. We don't want to spoil the surprise as we will be doing a post all about the collections when they are released so we have just given you a little teaser below...

Cockatoo tankard and it takes two to Mango! Yes!

A trip to the store would not be complete without a little shopping spree, so we headed down to check out the Christmas goodies and picked up more than a few supplies to keep us going until the next time we come and visit.

We would just like to say a massive THANK YOU to the guys at Paperchase for having us along, and for the awesome goodie bag!

Are you a Paperchase fan? What is your favourite piece of paperchasery? Or piece of stationary that you last bought?

Let us know, as usual in the comments below or on twitter @livelovemake

Live it: Domestic Sluttery Q&A at Made.com

Last week we hot-footed it up to London to go along to a Q&A with the lovely ladies of Domestic Sluttery.  The Ladies put on the event in order answer those questions, that they are always asked by us bloggers in training, all in one go.

Domestic Sluttery was set up about 5 years ago when home style blogs here in the UK were rare and blazed a trail. The site brings together lots of different writers who have a passion for all things domestic; cooking, homewares, travel, and just plain fun stuff - 'Cute or Creepy' anyone?

The event was held at the Made.com HQ and so we got to have a little nosey around there before the Q&A got started.

It was tough not buying up everything they had, but we resisted and H opted for a free pencil instead!

After the pre-event drinks we all sat down for the Q&A.  After a few short words from Sian - the founder and editor-in-chief, we were into questions.

It was great to be able to ask all those things that other people usually gloss over, especially in larger conferences.  There was about 60 of us there on the night and so we all had a chance to ask questions - after the initial 'no hands going up' of course!

They spoke honestly about advertising and inspiration in the first half of the night, with questions about optimising posts and links in your posts.  Also about how social media is a must for all us bloggers with questions about how to find which platforms work for you and how to use them to your advantage.

There was then an interval filled with cocktails and cake!  Amazing.

In the second half, it was talk about freelancing and how to do it - or in some cases how not to do it.  All the writers who work on Domestic Sluttery have freelance careers or full-time jobs and so for us, this was really interesting.

It was a great chance to find out more about what the ladies do and how they go about their normal lives around the blog - something which as full time workers and bloggers ourselves found really refreshing.

Seeing the individual personalities of all the girls was great too and they obviously get on just as much as you would imagine a bunch of girls to do, they just happen to write about beautiful and fun things too.

We had a lovely evening, that felt like hanging out with Domestic Sluttery.  We found some new and inspiring people to follow on Twitter and some good information to check out - so watch this space for how it might inspire us and our work here on our blog!

We also bumped into our friend Zoe from Craft Candy who let us into a few exciting developments with the site, can't wait to tell you all about that soon.

If you are a blogger or interested in freelance writing we would totally recommend keeping a look out for future events from these ladies. Head over to Domestic Sluttery and sign up for their newsletter, go on you know you want to.

Love it: Live it Vintage

I can't believe it was three weeks ago that H, Anna, Carly and Myself stood on an empty Maidenhead High Street at 6.30 am with butterflies in our tummies, waiting to see if our first event would be a success!

Our team had done all we could, months of planning had come down to one day...What a Day!!
There was sunshine and rain (the torrential kind) singing and dancing, furniture and clothes, Hair and make-up, cakes and buns, photography and cars, a fashion show and a dance lesson. We could not have hoped for a better day. Our traders were all lovely, our performers professional and our visitors happy.

Live it Vintage Thank you

We just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for you all coming out to the Vintage Fair in Maidenhead Town Centre on Saturday 4th August.

We animated the town centre and had some great feedback on the day. Despite the wet weather in the morning and a short downpour in the late afternoon, the weather did us proud in the end. We are so happy that you were all able to join in with the day and buy some goodies, dance in the street or have your hair and make-up done!

A larger post will come soon, but this is a big Thank You in the meantime!

With Live it Vintage love

Sammy and H

Live it: Art on the Street, May 2012

WARNING: What follows is an gratuitous collection of images showing off the Amazing talents of the people Maidenhead and the surrounding area's. If you are not a fan of Gorgeous art, Happy towns folk, BMW's covered in chalk pen, Beautiful crafts and Talented musicians.... turn away now.

I am not ashamed to say that on Saturday 12th of May I was more than little overcome by the simply beautiful site of so many people on the High Street where I live and run my business! In fact it is bringing tears of pride to my eyes as I type. The whole Team that make up Art on the Street really outdid themselves and showed us all what a community working together can really do.
{although I'm not gonna lie, I know for a fact that an entire egg & dairy free Happy Cake was consumed in the making of this event}

For the first time Art on the Street had a Live music element, giving local musicians a chance to perform on the stage, at busking points all over the town and in the Nicholson's Centre

There were so many amazing artists to see, I have shown you a few of my favourites. Above is the work of the lovely Sherry, who also runs Fashion design workshops for kids aged 11-16.

Above is the work of one of A.O.T.S founders Harriet Brittaine. My photos do not do these justice, the colours were stunning!

These unusual pieces are by Wendy Earley, no ordinary paintings... they are inlaid with mirror pieces to reflect the light. I had a lovely chat with Wendy and she told me about Bucks Open Studios.
'Bucks Open Studios is the largest visual arts event in the county. In June every year over 500 artists and makers, in over 150 different venues across Buckinghamshire, open their studios and run exhibitions and events for the public to visit.' Definitely worth checking out!
Another artist who caught my eye was Terry Murphy, who was not at his pitch so sadly I didn't get a chance to have a chat, but his colourful abstract work was gorgeous!  definitely on my Christmas list.

Below are just some of the other lovely works on show!

One of the events sponsors is Claires Court school, who had an amazing collection of the students work on show, as well as running all sorts of workshops around the town and having lots of performers on the bill all day long!
It wasn't just our High Street that had been beatified for the day, the Craft Coops usual haunt, the old Waterstones unit in the Nicholson's Centre was bursting at the seams with ceramics and crafts and even more art. As well as being home to Happy Cakes Vintage Cafe and Claires Court free art workshops.
Bumped in to a few familiar faces too, one of our lovely customers Jenni of Pinkcostello had some of her Glass pieces on display with Emerald Gallery, which is definitely on my next places to visit list.

Above is the beautiful ceramics of Susan Day, who btw was the same Susan that taught me willow weaving back in march, this lady is a woman of many talents!

Promethean was not a company I was widely aware of except I knew my Husband had one of their interactive whiteboards at his office. But having had a go on these giant drawing screens... I want one, sooo much fun!

Official buskers in the Nicholson's Centre were joined by living statues.
As I worked my way back out in to the High Street, I spied some familiar work, in the shape of colourful bunny rabbits and elephants at Buttercup Designs. Denise had left her space in her cousins capable hands while she attended a friends wedding, her pitch was looking super pretty!

If you came along, or if you follow me on Instagram {@samanthaclaridge}you will already know all about the epic-ness that was Art Car! it felt so wrong to write all over a pristine white BMW... but it felt sooooo good too!

A few of our friends beat me to it.

Awesome weather, Awesome people, Awesome art, Awesome Art on the Street! We applaud you.

Love it
Sammy xxx
